An unofficial version of Nvidia’s DLSS 5 has surfaced in the hands of modders, and they are already experimenting with it across a wide range of games. The leaked code, apparently pulled from an early access build of NBA 2K27, has been used to apply Nvidia’s AI-driven rendering techniques to titles as varied as Control, Skyrim, Cyberpunk 2077, GTA V, and even GTA San Andreas. What started as a quick experiment has turned into a miniature movement, with gameplay clips and side-by-side comparisons spreading across video platforms and modding communities.
The source of the leak appears to be the RenoDX Discord channel, a group known for reverse-engineering graphics features. Members reportedly found a way to extract the DLSS Neural Rendering file from the NBA 2K27 build and repurpose it for other games. The first successful public test was on Control, Remedy Entertainment’s supernatural action game. Once that worked, the modders expanded their testing to other titles, demonstrating how the experimental technology behaves outside Nvidia’s official partners.
What is DLSS 5?
Before getting into the visual changes, it helps to understand what DLSS 5 is supposed to do. Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling has gone through several generations. The original version used tensor cores to upscale lower-resolution frames so games could run at higher settings with less performance loss. Later versions added ray reconstruction and frame generation. DLSS 5 is a much larger step. Nvidia describes it as an AI graphics technology that can bring photoreal lighting and materials to games in real time. The system is built around what the company calls Neural Rendering, a broad term for using trained neural networks to generate or enhance parts of a frame that traditional rendering would leave expensive or impossible to compute.
That broader definition makes DLSS 5 more than a simple performance boost. It is designed to change how characters, lighting, and objects are represented. In the hands of modders, that means a slider can alter a face or shift the color temperature of an entire scene. Those are not the kinds of changes normally associated with a technical feature; they are creative choices.
Modders apply DLSS 5 to unsupported games
Much of the early footage centers on faces. In Control, protagonist Jesse Faden becomes the subject of a striking demonstration. With the mod’s Neural Uplift setting disabled, her face appears smooth and uniform. When the setting is enabled with certain presets, her skin turns paler, laugh lines become more visible, and there is what looks like smudged makeup under her eyes. It is not a subtle change, and it has prompted discussion about how AI-based rendering might reinterpret character models rather than simply improve them.
The same sense of uncanny transformation appears in other tests. In GTA San Andreas, the effect is different but equally dramatic. The mod appears to add a filter to CJ’s face and enhances textures across the city. Shadows become more pronounced, both on the character and on the environment. Adjusting a slider can shift the city’s lighting from warm to cool, changing the atmosphere of a scene in real time. Clips from GTA V show a similar transformation, with shadows and facial detail adjusting while the frame rate drops noticeably.
Other games have been put through the same unofficial treatment. A Palworld character, for instance, gains more definition while the cartoon aesthetic begins to blur into something closer to stylized realism. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has also been tested, and the results are mixed. One modder reported that the mod halves their frame rate and that swapping between presets eats a ton of VRAM. In another GTA V test, a counter can be seen falling from 90 to 29 FPS as the sliders are moved. These are not exactly surprising results. The leaked code was not designed for these games, and it is running without the kind of integration Nvidia’s official partners would have.
Performance costs and hardware requirements
Performance is currently the biggest drawback of the unofficial DLSS 5 code. Even on powerful systems, enabling the experimental features can cause severe frame rate drops and unusually high VRAM usage. The mod first appeared to be limited to Nvidia’s RTX 50-series graphics cards, but reports now indicate that it can be made to work on RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 GPUs as well. That does not mean the experience is smooth; the tests suggest that the code is still raw and unoptimized, especially when users cycle through presets.
The fact that it can run on some RTX 40-series cards is notable because DLSS 5 was announced as a showcase for Nvidia’s latest hardware. The official version may include optimizations and features that depend on the 50-series architecture, but this leak demonstrates that at least some of the underlying neural rendering work can be adapted to older GPUs with enough effort. It also raises the possibility that the full version will be more widely accessible than originally expected, at least at the driver level.
Mixed reactions and Nvidia’s response
Early responses to the leaked DLSS 5 mod have been divided. Some players say the filters make games look more detailed and cinematic. They point to more defined facial features, stronger shadows, and richer lighting as signs of the technology’s potential. Others are less impressed. Critics have described the effect as AI slop and compared it to over-processed image filters that remove the original art direction and replace it with a generic, machine-generated look. This divide is not new. It has been building ever since the first DLSS versions started reshaping image quality in real time.
The negative reaction echoes the skepticism that followed the official DLSS 5 announcement. Nvidia unveiled the technology in March, promising real-time photoreal lighting and materials for games. The official version will likely be more polished than the leaked code, with developer-facing tools and potentially more restraint in how the AI effects are applied. But the modding community has already shown that the technology can be extracted and used in ways that Nvidia may not have intended. That kind of experimentation is unlikely to stop once the full version is released.
The DLSS 5 leak is part of a longer pattern of modders pushing new graphics technology further than its creators intended. Neural rendering feels like the next major battlefield. Unlike traditional upscaling or frame generation, which work at the pixel or frame level, neural rendering attempts to change the way geometry, lighting, and materials are represented. If it is pushed as a one-click improvement that players can apply as they please, the reactions on display in the leaked mod tests may be a preview of much larger debates. For now, the modding scene is having fun with it, and every new clip adds another piece of evidence to both sides of the argument.
Whether the final version arrives with more restraint or leans fully into maximum AI processing, the conversation it has started among players and developers is likely to continue well beyond the fall launch.
