In an exclusive interview, Halsey teased the long-awaited showdowns between Laura and her new rival, Nellie Oleson, in the show's upcoming second season.

“There’s going to be some drama on the prairie,” Halsey said with a smile, hinting at the friction that will define the relationship between the two iconic characters.

The series, which premiered its first season in March 2026 on Netflix, was renewed for a second season even before the first episode aired. The early vote of confidence from the streaming giant has allowed the creative team to begin assembling a talented cast for new roles, including the much-anticipated introduction of Nellie Oleson. In May, Netflix announced that Willa Dunn had been cast as Nellie, and Halsey revealed that the two young actresses met during a chemistry read.

“We did a chemistry read so I could meet some possible Nellies, and I met Willa and we had fun immediately,” Halsey recalled. “We were doing the hula and boxing. It was so fun. I love her.”

That immediate camaraderie between the actors is important, given the contentious relationship their characters share. In the Little House universe, Laura Ingalls and Nellie Oleson are perennial rivals. Part of Laura hates her because she can be pretty snotty, but I think that part of the reason that Laura hates her is because Nellie is everything that Laura’s not,” she said. “Nellie is popular and … she seems smart and pretty and doesn’t seem self-conscious at all and she’s rich. She can have everything that she wants.”

This psychological depth aligns with the show’s overall approach, which aims to modernize the classic book series by Laura Ingalls Wilder while staying true to its heart. Showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine has emphasized that each season adapts one of Wilder’s novels, allowing for a slow-burn narrative that evolves with the characters.

Sonnenshine also shared details about the show’s setting, Walnut Grove, which has been carefully reconstructed for the series. “In terms of the new Walnut Grove, I’m really excited for people to see it,” Sonnenshine said. “I actually visited the real Walnut Grove last year … so we took a lot of inspiration from that, from the real town.”

The showrunner added, “We are so excited to show people our Walnut Grove, which is inspired by the real place and inspired by the books. I think it’s going to be so fun and different. That’s the exciting thing about our show, I think, is that we are exploring all these places and giving a different feel to every season.”
