When I arrived at the refurbished railway station in London, there were none of the usual signs of a tattoo studio. The walls were bare, no reclining chairs, no massage tables, and the only tattoo gun in the room sat inside a display case rather than buzzing in a gloved hand. It felt like being tattooed in a half-assembled biolab. But the experience that followed was unlike any traditional tattoo appointment.

My latest tattoo did not hurt. That is not bravado. Having a small sparkle lineart permanently marked on my skin was genuinely painless. It took seconds, and it didn't involve any grisly needles—at least not in the traditional sense. The tattoo was applied by CipherX, a London-based biotech company that has developed disposable Microdot patches, a new alternative form of permanent tattooing.

Each patch is roughly the size of a US quarter and uses microscopic, biodegradable needles to deposit pigment into the upper layers of the skin. The process is designed to be quiet, fast, and pain-free, and based on my experience, it delivers on all three promises. That combination could open the door for more people to get permanent ink, especially those who have avoided tattoos because of needle anxiety or pain.

How the Microdot patch works

Microneedle technology is not entirely new. Cosmetic products have used similar approaches for years, and researchers have explored microneedle tattoo patches since at least 2022. But CipherX appears to be the first to turn the concept into a consumer-ready product. The patch itself is a small disc covered in hundreds of microscopic needles that dissolve after embedding pigment into the skin. Because the needles are so small, they don't trigger the same pain receptors as traditional tattoo needles.

The application process was faster than I expected. After choosing my design—a "Bold Sparkle," now widely associated with AI iconography—CipherX CEO Ferdinand Kohle placed an ink-coated transparent guide disc on my arm to mark the placement. He then lined up a 3D-printed applicator with the ink guidelines, pressed a button, and removed it. The Microdot patch was already affixed to my arm, with 112 microneedles embedded in my skin.

A flexible tattoo bandage was applied to keep the patch in place, and a branded plastic sticker was placed over that. Kohle admitted the sticker was unnecessary and was presumably there for marketing purposes. The final step was waiting 15 minutes for the pigment to deposit. During that time, I was free to move around.

A painless experience with one small annoyance

I was warned that I might feel a slight "flicking" sensation as the applicator was pressed. But I barely noticed anything. It felt more like someone had lightly touched my arm with a finger. I wouldn't even call the sensation uncomfortable, let alone painful. I have sensitive skin and bleed easily, but I experienced no bleeding or irritation from the microneedles. There was also no scabbing or healing time, unlike with my other tattoos.

The only truly annoying part was the branded sticker. It pinched my skin whenever I moved my arm. The tattoo was applied near the inside of my elbow, one of the more painful areas for traditional tattooing. I already have my ankles done, another pain-prone area, and I wanted to compare. The microneedle patch was far more comfortable than either experience.

After 15 minutes, the patch was removed, revealing the new tattoo. The design initially consisted of many tiny dots rather than a smooth, connected line. CipherX said the ink would "bleed" together as it developed, similar to how a regular tattoo settles over the years. However, five days later, the dots were still visible. I had to look very closely to see them, but they were definitely there. The tattoo had darkened over time, as promised, but it settled into a shade of black that looked fairly washed out, as if it had been on my skin for years rather than days.

Current limitations

This isn't a viable solution for every part of the body. The applicator needs a relatively flat surface area to accommodate the patch, and the skin must be able to stretch slightly. Bony areas like ankle joints or fingers aren't ideal if you want the entire design to come out cleanly. CipherX also isn't offering tattoos on the face, neck, hands, or groin area. The company says that's because it isn't comfortable doing so, and it notes that some traditional tattoo artists have similar personal boundaries.

The design selection is also limited. Right now, CipherX offers only about 15 designs, none of which can be customized. They can't measure larger than 15mm in diameter, and black is the only available color. That will change eventually. The company is developing additional colors, including an invisible UV-reactive ink, and is working on a larger size option. It also plans to collaborate with established artists for future releases. These developments were previewed at the launch event.

Who is it for?

As someone who prefers larger, colorful custom tattoos, I can confidently say I'm not the target demographic for Microdot patches. But I'm also not entirely sure who is. The tattoos could work as space fillers for people who already have ink, though those people probably don't mind the pain of traditional tattooing. They could be a good option for people with needle phobias, but those individuals would have to really want a tattoo and be willing to accept a generic design on their skin forever.

At £50—about $66—the price feels fair for a more comfortable tattoo experience. It's comparable to what you'd pay for a similarly sized traditional tattoo, though pricing varies by region and artist rates. One question I still have is how permanent these tattoos really are. The ink darkened after application, but it currently looks faded, which is concerning for something labeled permanent. CipherX says updates are coming, and I plan to report on how the tattoo changes in the coming months.

DIY home kits and the future

CipherX also showed me an interesting perk in development: home kits that would let people apply the tattoo themselves. At the launch event, the company displayed a mockup of a palm-sized metal tin that could be shipped directly to customers in the future. I asked for a launch timeline, but CipherX hasn't responded at the time of writing.

For now, Microdot tattoos are only available through approved pop-ups in London, where trained practitioners handle age verification. That's an important safeguard, because even though the process looks simple, permanent tattoos require legal oversight. The patches are disposable and come with clear warnings that the result is permanent.

The technology behind microneedle patches has been studied for decades, mostly for drug delivery and vaccine administration. Hundreds of tiny needles can pierce the outer layer of skin without causing significant pain or bleeding. Applying that concept to tattoos is a natural extension, but it comes with unique challenges. Ensuring consistent ink delivery, preventing patch displacement, and maintaining design quality are all hurdles that CipherX is still working through.

The broader tattoo industry has seen steady innovation, from robotic tattoo artists to temporary ink that disappears. But permanent ink remains a deeply personal choice. A painless, mail-order tattoo could lower the barrier for many people, but it also raises questions about impulse decisions and the value of the tattooing experience. Traditional tattooists argue that the ritual, the artist-client relationship, and the permanence deserve respect. A patch that anyone can apply at home might change that dynamic.

Still, the appeal is obvious. Needle anxiety is one of the most common reasons people avoid tattoos. For those individuals, a no-needle alternative could be transformative. The tradeoff is the lack of variety and customization, at least for now. As CipherX expands its design library, adds colors, and develops larger patches, the audience may grow.

The road to a tattoo is often as important as the result. With Microdot patches, that road becomes shorter, quieter, and far less intimidating. Whether that's a good thing depends on how much you value the process. For me, the experience was memorable for how boring it was. No buzzing, no pain, no healing. Just a few minutes of waiting and a small, permanent mark on my skin.

It wasn't life-changing. But I have no regrets.
